SEATTLE -- Alleging discrimination at Seattle Pacific University, Shakespear Feyissa was keen to land his story in the student newspaper.

Ten years later, he just wants to get it out.

While a senior at SPU 10 years ago, Feyissa was arrested on suspicion of attempted sexual assault and suspended. He was never charged, but the suspension stuck -- indefinitely.

Feyissa complained that his punishment was more severe because of his race, he told the student newspaper at the time, but an investigation dismissed his claim.

He's a lawyer now, and that article -- still among the first hits for Feyissa's name on Google -- continues to hurt him personally and professionally, he said. So Feyissa, at 33, has been pressuring SPU to help clear his name.

Administrators are willing to remove the article from the newspaper's online archives, but the student editors want none of it.

In an age when a Google cache can matter just as much as a polished resume, people's life stories are no longer solely their own to tell. Instead, the traces of their lives are adrift in cyberspace, their reputations strewn across old news clippings or Facebook profiles or online discussion forums. Collecting and managing the fragments can be like repairing Humpty Dumpty.

"Information floating around in the ether -- we don't have any way to stop that or go out there scrubbing the record," said Brock Meeks, a spokesman for the Center for Democracy and Technology, a Washington, D.C., think tank. "Picking up all the breadcrumbs would be a Herculean task."

But Feyissa is bent on trying.

"It's still the most painful experience of my life," he said, "the lack of justice, the lack of fairness."

Back in May 1998, Feyissa filed discrimination complaints with the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights and with SPU, alleging he was disciplined more harshly based on his race and national origin. Both investigations cleared the small Christian private school of wrongdoing.

Feyissa, who emigrated from Ethiopia in 1992, couldn't find a lawyer to represent him. He became one himself, with a degree from Seattle University School of Law.

He sued SPU in 2004 for violating its own policies by suspending him without a hearing. He lost the case in 2005 and an appeal in 2006 because the statute of limitations had expired. (That lawsuit also appears on Google.)

Feyissa didn't stop there. He still believes justice has not been served.

The 1998 article in the student newspaper, the Falcon, quotes Feyissa saying "SPU is still a school like the KKK, in my opinion." It also quotes then-provost Bruce Murphy saying there was "sound reason to believe that Mr. Feyissa is a threat to persons on campus."

With that popping up every time someone searches his name, Feyissa said he cannot escape the shadow of the accusation of attempted sexual assault, even though Seattle police closed the investigation and he was never charged. He's also worried what people will think after reading this article.

"Do you know how many girls, after they see that, we go on a date and they don't want to see me again?" he asked.

And for the sake of his business, Feyissa said, he fears the article casts him as a troublemaker who files frivolous discrimination complaints -- not exactly the image he wants as a civil-rights lawyer.

Opposing attorneys have dug up the article to smear him in litigation, he said. Once a juror asked him about it in court.

So for two years, Feyissa has requested that SPU remove the article, most recently four months ago, he said.

Seeking to end the bruising and expensive fracas, SPU moved to placate Feyissa. SPU's attorney on the case, Michael Porter, agreed in a Sept. 5, 2006, letter to purge the article. Administrators a month later asked the Falcon's student editors to delete the story.

Their answer: No way.

"We explained to them, if they wanted to start down a path of removing historical archives and pulling it from the public sphere, what they're doing is censorship," said Chris Durr, the editor at the time. "We basically said, sorry, we have principles in journalism that don't allow us to put stuff in the memory hole and pretend it never happened."

After all, the students said, it's factual and a matter of record.

"Shakespear Feyissa may not like the story, but that doesn't mean he should get to dictate what gets removed from a newspaper's online archive," Debra Smith, who wrote the original article, said in an e-mail. She now writes for The Herald in Everett, Wash., and teaches a journalism class at SPU. "A newspaper serves as the paper of record for a community. I don't think that function changes when the content moves online."

She added that the decision lay solely with the student editors. Rick Jackson, the newspaper's adviser, declined to comment.

After former editor Durr said no, he never received an official response from the administration. But SPU's request returned in January 2008 with a new batch of editors.

Don Mortenson, vice president of business and planning, said administrators tried repeatedly to convince the students that the article benefited no one and wasn't worth standing up for. But from the students' perspective, the larger issue -- freedom of the press -- was.

"The student editors decided it was their right or whatever to keep online what they wanted," Mortenson said. "It's not a matter of someone's rights being violated, it's just a matter of wisdom. Is it the prudent thing to do?"

Mortenson said every time Feyissa calls SPU's attorney about the Falcon, the school gets the bill.

"I'd love to have the students pay for it next time," he said.

But as long as the Falcon's editors won't budge, neither will that article. It's stored on the Falcon's computer server, to which administrators have no access, Mortenson said.

While the wrangle between Feyissa and SPU has worn on, the Falcon's server has aged. Now it needs replacing.

When the Falcon asked the student government in April for $3,000 for a new server or Web host, the student government consulted the administration about its liability in exactly this kind of situation, said Daniel Miller, last year's student government president.

The administration replied that first it wants the Falcon's editor-in-chief to sign a contract giving officials access to the new server, and affirming that SPU is the publisher of the Falcon and has final say over content.

That's something the incoming editor, Evi Sztajno, is not willing to do.

"It's a private university -- they have every legal right to come in and take this article down, but for some reason they're asking my permission to take it down," she said. "That's permission I cannot give because of journalistic ethics, which, I might add, we are taught at this school."

Feeling squeezed in the middle of the saga between Feyissa and SPU, the Falcon staff is hoping to stand on the First Amendment. But at a private school, their latitude is limited, said Adam Goldstein, an attorney for the Student Press Law Center.

"If the school thinks that its ability to erase the record of someone who, once upon a time, was accused of a crime is more important than its ability to provide a media education, it's free to do that," Goldstein said.

Mortenson said he was not involved with the server request and directed questions to Les Steele, the vice president of academic affairs, who was on vacation this week.

As long as the impasse between the Falcon and the administration continues, so does the standoff between SPU and Feyissa.

         ____________________

Comment:

Internet is a tool

White-House-President.com is NOT a Government Website or Blog

Israel Zionist Terrorists Use Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Weapons
So the weapons we are going to be looking at are:

- Nuclear Weapons

- Depleted Uranium

- Chemical & Biological Weapons

- Cluster Munitions

It is believed that Israel has used all the above during the last 60 years, with the exception of dropping a nuclear bomb, although it seems certain that it possesses a nuclear arsenal.

A little word about international humanitarian law: the treaties that govern it are the four Geneva Conventions of 1949 and the Additional Protocols. The 1st Protocol prohibits indiscriminate attacks, including "those which employ a method or means of combat which cannot be directed at a specific military objective," and "those which employ a method or means of combat, the effects of which cannot be limited as required by this Protocol" (1). In effect, any attack has to be directed at a military target and contained to that target.

We are going to look at the different categories, and Israel's use of them…

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nuclear Weapons

According to the Nuclear Threat Initiative - headed by CNN founder Ted Turner and Senator Sam Nunn, who served as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee - Israel is the sixth nation in the world to develop and acquire a nuclear weapons capability, and they explicitly state that since 1970, Israel's status as a nuclear weapon state has become an accepted international fact (2).

As far back as 1986, Israeli nuclear technician Mordechi Vanunu showed photographs and other evidence of nuclear production to the Sunday Times, and told the newspaper that Israel had 100-200 nuclear devices (3). This estimate is backed up by the Arms Control Association, which put the figure at 75-200 warheads in October 2007. These numbers are based on the amount of fissile material Israel is estimated to have produced; this is highly enriched uranium, a key element for making nuclear weapons (4).

Israel is not a member of the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty, and its official stance has always been one of opacity and deliberate ambiguity on the subject. It wants people to think it has nuclear capabilities, but refuses to confirm it. It was Israeli military leader and politician Moshe Dayan who famously said: "Israel must be like a mad dog, too dangerous to bother" (5).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Depleted Uranium

Depleted Uranium is a by-product of the enriching of natural uranium for use in nuclear reactors. It is a chemically toxic and radioactive heavy metal used particularly in armour-piercing ammunition (1).

There are many reports that Israel has been using DU since as far back as 1973. Dr Doug Rokke was head of the US Army’s investigative team into the assessment of the dangers of DU, and has been called on to advise the US Senate, Department of Defense and House of Representatives, the British House of Lords and House of Commons, and the UN. According to him, the Israelis first used DU munitions against the Egyptians in the 1973 Arab-Israeli war, and more recently, he says the US sold Israel over 100 GBU 28s (precision-guided bombs) for use in Lebanon.

There were pictures posted on several news websites of Israeli soldiers loading these DU weapons onto Israeli tanks. These photographs mysteriously disappeared from several news websites just after they were published, but a few were retrieved from the Getty archive (6):

Correspondent Robert Fisk wrote in the Independent in October 2006 that "scientific evidence gathered from at least two bomb craters in Khiam and At-Tiri, suggests that uranium-based munitions may now also be included in Israel's weapons inventory - and were used against targets in Lebanon. According to Dr Chris Busby, the British Scientific Secretary of the European Committee on Radiation Risk, two soil samples thrown up by Israeli bombs showed 'elevated radiation signatures'. Both had been forwarded for further examination to a laboratory used by the Ministry of Defense, which has confirmed the concentration of uranium isotopes in the samples."

The Busby report goes on to say: "The health effects on local civilian populations … are likely to be significant ... we recommend that the area is examined for further traces of these weapons with a view to clean up" (7).

The Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman said: "Israel does not use any weaponry which is not authorised by international law or international conventions."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chemical & Biological Weapons

Allegations that Israeli forces have used chemical and biological weapons date back to the war of 1948. According to Israeli military historian Dr Uri Milstein, the typhoid epidemic that spread in Acre that year, just before the town fell, was due to the Israeli Defence Force's deliberate contamination of the city's water supply (8).

There seems to be little doubt that Israel possesses an active chemical weapons programme, and that this is located at the Israel Institute for Biological Research in Ness Ziona.

"I have no doubt that Israel has worked on both chemical and biological offensive matter for a long time… (but) I do not think you will find much on it," Bill Richardson, deputy secretary of defence responsible for the chemical and biological warfare programmes in the Reagan and Bush administrations, said in 1998. "We have always seemed to have a double standard on Israel, compared to talking about the threats from other countries. There is no doubt they have had stuff for years" (13).

In October 1992, an Israeli El Al cargo plane bound for Israel crashed near Amsterdam. In the following months hundreds of people, local residents and those who had been working on the crash site complained of unidentified health problems, including respitory problems, skin disorders, nausea and neurological problems.

The Israeli authorities refused to publish a full list of the cargo manifest, and after persistent speculation in the Netherlands about the nature of the freight, the Dutch government finally had to conduct an inquiry. The report, published in April 1999, concluded that toxins were released during the crash, including three of the four chemicals used in the manufacture of the nerve gas sarin, as well as depleted uranium which was recovered after the crash.

The Israeli authorities admitted to having on the plane 50 gallons of the chemical dimethyl methylphosphonate, enough to produce 594 pounds of the sarin, but "the material was non-toxic and was to have been used to test filters that protect against chemical weapons" (11, 12, 22, 23).

The chemical weapon that has been used most by Israel is probably white phosphorous. It combusts when it comes into contact with air, and can burn flesh to the bone (20). Independent correspondent Robert Fisk writes that in 1982 in Lebanon, "journalists discovered dying and dead civilians whose wounds caught fire when exposed to air," and that he himself saw "two dead babies who, when taken from a mortuary drawer in West Beirut during the Israeli siege ... suddenly burst back into flames" (6).

During the 2006 war in Lebanon, many civilians were photographed with injuries consistent with white phosphorous burns. In one case, a doctor working in a hospital near Ba'albak said he had received three corpses "entirely shriveled with black-green skin," a phenomenon characteristic of phosphorus injuries (21).

Emile Lahoud, Lebanon's president at the time, said the IDF used phosphorus munitions against civilians in his country (21).

There are also reports of Israel having used unidentified toxic weapons. In March 2003, the BBC aired Israel's Secret Weapon, an investigation of the country's development of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. "The Israeli army has used new unidentified weapons," the BBC reported. "In February 2001 a new gas was used in Gaza. A hundred and eighty patients were admitted to hospitals with severe convulsions…Israel is outside chemical and biological weapons treaties, and still refuses to say what the new gas was" (9).

On 10 June 2004, medical units in the West Bank town of Al-Zawiya reported that they treated 130 patients for gas inhalation. The patients were children, women, old people and young men. Dr Abu Madi related said there was a high number of cases of tetany, spasms in legs and hands, connected to the nervous system. "Pupils were dilated … and symptoms included shock, semi-consciousness, hyperventilation, irritation and sweating" (10).

In July 2006, the Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that Israel is using "a new type of explosive in its offensive on the Gaza Strip. These explosives contain toxic and radioactive materials which burn and tear the victim's body from the inside and leave long term deformations" (9).

In October 2006, Israel finally admitted that it had used white phosphorous in southern Lebanon that summer, but that "according to international law, the use of phosphorous munitions is authorised and the [Israeli] army keeps to the rules of international norms" (7).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cluster Munitions

Cluster bombs scatter either dozens or hundreds of sub-munitions, depending on their type, over an area the size of one or two football pitches (1 & 14). One of the biggest problems of cluster munitions is that many of these bomblets fail to explode when they are first dropped or fired. They end up being much like landmines and, when dropped, can settle in trees and fields unexploded, posing a grave danger to local civilians.

During the conflict in Lebanon in July-August 2006, the Israeli Defence Force dropped around 4 million sub-munitions over the south of the country (14). Estimates vary, but this figure is according to Human Rights Watch.

The UN's mine disposal agency says about 40% of the cluster bombs fired by Israel failed to detonate (15). David Shearer, then the UN humanitarian coordinator in Lebanon, called the attack "outrageous" (16). UN humanitarian chief Jan Egeland went further: "What is shocking, and I would say completely immoral, is that 90% of the cluster bomb strikes occurred in the last 72 hours of the conflict, when we knew there would be a resolution, when we knew there would be an end" (17).

Chris Clark, the programme manager for the UN Mine Action Coordination Centre, added: "What we have seen are strikes on top of strikes on top of strikes on top of strikes. It is tantamount to shooting a dead body 20 times" (18).

And an IDF spokesman said: "All the weapons and munitions used by the Israeli Defence Force are legal under international law, and their use conforms with international standards" (19).

HRW researchers who were on the ground during and after the conflict say their findings paint quite a different picture: "Research in more than 40 towns and villages found that the IDF's use of cluster munitions was both indiscriminate and disproportionate, in violation of International Humanitarian Law, and in some locations possibly a war crime" (14).

Al-Arab, London -

White-House-President.com is NOT a Government Website or Blog

Answer to Civil Complaint - Case No.GIC882306
The documents below are from a civil complaint filed by Pacific Law Center.
MOZAMBICAN police have detained a suspected human trafficker after discovering 40 children packed into trucks in inhumane conditions along the African country's main highway, an official said today.

The children were loaded on trucks in northern Mozambique and were en route to the southern part of the country, where there is a growing child labour and prostitution problem, said Feliciano Dique, a spokesman for the Sofala provincial police.

The driver of one of the trucks told police they were transporting the kids to schools in the capital Maputo and elsewhere in the nation.

"We don't believe this theory because the children are hungry and weak, while they don't have any proper documentation. The driver does not even know their names, therefore, he has been detained for questioning," Mr Dique said.

Mozambique is expected this year to enact a law that would increase prison sentences for human smugglers and others engaging in the practice. Those caught trafficking people currently face jail terms ranging from two to eight years.

But authorities have not yet prosecuted any human smugglers. Efforts to do so have been handicapped by the former Portuguese colony's general tolerance of child labour, which is common in its rural areas, as well as its weak border controls.

Smugglers have seized on the country's complacent attitude, arranging for young men and boys to be sent to work on farms and mines, and young girls to be sold into domestic servitude and to brothels in neighbouring southern African nations.

The smuggling networks are usually small operations run by Mozambicans and South Africans. South Africa is one of the major destinations for those who fall prey to the human traffickers.

An estimated 1000 Mozambican women and children are trafficked to South Africa each year, according to the International Organisation on Migration (IOM).
_______________________________

_______________________________

With quiet dignity, three African orphans took their seats on stage at BYU's School of Social Work's Orphan Awareness Conference Friday.

The children, far from their home in Mozambique, whispered back and forth with their translators as researchers and non-governmental organization representatives shared statistics with an attentive audience about the realities of the sub-Saharan orphan crisis-realities that Luis, Amelia, and Afonso Belchior live with every day.

Jini Roby, associate professor in social work and conference organizer, said that becoming an orphan hinders children's education and nutrition. Orphans also becomevulnerable to abuse and neglect, and subjects them to social stigma, legal battles over inheritances, child labor, child trafficking, and prostitution.

"This is not just a list of sensational things that could happen," Roby said. "These are things that are happening."

Roby also said that the extended families of many of the 43 million orphans in sub-Saharan Africa want to care for them, but simply don't have the means. Presenters at the conference said the best way to deal with the orphan crisis is to make it possible for children to grow up in families rather than orphanages, preferably families in their native cultures and communities.

"The answer, as far as we're concerned, is making the villages capable of taking care of those kids," said Lon Kennard, co-founder of service organization Village of Hope.

Despite what outsiders think, many dying mothers view orphanages as the best care option for their children because they believe that such establishments can consistently offer children food, medical care, and education, Roby said.

"Mothers don't have the luxury of worrying about the psychological impact of institutionalization," Roby said.

Jennifer Boehme Kumar, executive director of service organization Help International, said that what these mothers don't know is that most orphanages are at full capacity.

"The caretakers that we work with genuinely love and care for the children, but they are so overwhelmed," Kumar said.

Before their placement in an orphanage, the Belchior children lived in the roofless house their father was unable to finish building before his death.

Fourteen-year-old Amelia told the audience about the day-to-day hardships she and her brothers experienced. They had no money to buy soap to wash their clothes and no stove to cook on. She described their dirt floor as being "very different" from the polished hard wood in the Hinckley Center, where the conference was held.

Amelia said that she watched her brother go door to door begging for food.

The children's older brother, who left his school in another city when their parents died, arranged for his siblings placement in an orphanage so that he could serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Life in the orphanage was also difficult for the children.

"There is a lot of sickness," Amelia Belchior said. "All of the children, they get infected, because they sleep in the same room."

Disease, specifically AIDS, is one of the biggest factors contributing to the orphan crisis in Africa. Both of the children's parents and older brother died of AIDS. Because of the social stigma in Mozambique against the disease, many are in a state of denial.

Sixteen-year-old Luis Belchior, who was informed of the cause of his parents' deaths just two weeks ago, said he sees the need to recognize it for what it is.

"AIDS really exists," Luis Belchior said. "Many people don't believe this, but it exists. I didn't accept that (my parents( had died of a sickness like that, but as time moves on, the capacity of the human increases. I started to search for full understanding. "

Mothers Without Boarders founder Kathy Headlee, who also spoke at the conference, said, "I applaud and thank these children for connecting two worlds. It's hard for them to come here and see what we have and wonder 'why didn't I draw that straw?'"

The children said that the fact that their trip to the United States was made possible was nothing short of miraculous. Luis, who has been teaching seminary in Mozambique since he was 14, said that he hasn't always been as comfortable talking to people about his life as he is now.

"I started to talk because I started to see the situation I was in," Luis Belchior said. "I knew that I had to gain courage. I had to speak."

Sharon Slater, president of the Family Watch International organization, which sponsored the children's trip, said that the children's membership in the LDS church gave them strength.

"The church was their life," Slater said.

The children were introduced to the gospel by their older brother, who before his death, taught them to share their testimonies, give talks, and read the scriptures.

"I know that Jesus Christ has a message for me to give," Luis Belchior said. "It is this: what helped us survive is work. Without work there is no life."

During the question-and-answer session at the end of the conference, presenters addressed audience questions about how BYU students can get involved now.

"Don't underestimate the power that your pocketbook has," said Jennifer Boehme Kumar, executive director of service organization Help International.. "Rent for a month in Mozambique is $17. How often do we blow $17 going out to Cold Stone or something? Even if your funds are small, give something."

Presenters also said that there are many organizations with foreign aid volunteer programs that can be relevant to any major.

Melissa Flores, an exercise science major who attended the conference, said part of receiving a higher education is learning about the problems in the world. For Flores, learning about problems was enough to make her want to help. She did so through the Help International organization in El Salvador.

"You never forget," Flores said. "You always remember that compassion, that understanding that you gain from those experiences."

WASHINGTON - Senior Pentagon officials, evidently reflecting a broader administration policy decision, used an off-the-record Pentagon briefing to turn the January 6 US-Iranian incident in the Strait of Hormuz into a sensational story demonstrating Iran's military aggressiveness, a reconstruction of the events following the incident shows.

The initial press stories on the incident, all of which can be traced to a briefing by deputy assistant secretary of defense for public affairs in charge of media operations, Bryan Whitman, contained similar information that has since been repudiated by the navy itself.

Then the navy disseminated a short video into which was spliced the audio of a phone call warning that US warships would "explode" in "a few seconds". Although it was ostensibly a navy production, Inter Press Service (IPS) has learned that the ultimate decision on its content was made by top officials of the Defense Department.

The encounter between five small and apparently unarmed speedboats, each carrying a crew of two to four men, and the three US warships occurred very early on Saturday January 6, Washington time. No information was released to the public about the incident for more than 24 hours, indicating that it was not viewed initially as being very urgent.

The reason for that absence of public information on the incident for more than a full day is that it was not that different from many others in the Gulf over more than a decade. A Pentagon consultant who asked not to be identified told IPS he had spoken with officers who had experienced similar encounters with small Iranian boats throughout the 1990s, and that such incidents are "just not a major threat to the US Navy by any stretch of the imagination".

Just two weeks earlier, on December 19, the USS Whidbey Island, an amphibious warship, had fired warning shots after a small Iranian boat allegedly approached it at high speed. That incident had gone without public notice.

With the reports from Fifth Fleet commander Vice Admiral Kevin Cosgriff in hand early that morning, top Pentagon officials had all day Sunday, January 6, to discuss what to do about the encounter in the Strait of Hormuz. The result was a decision to play it up as a major incident.

The decision came just as President George W Bush was about to leave on a Middle East trip aimed in part at rallying Arab states to join the United States in an anti-Iran coalition.

That decision in Washington was followed by a news release by the commander of the Fifth Fleet on the incident at about 4am Washington time on January 7. It was the first time the Fifth Fleet had issued a news release on an incident with small Iranian boats.

The release reported that the Iranian "small boats" had "maneuvered aggressively in close proximity of [sic] the Hopper [the lead ship of the three-ship convoy]." But it did not suggest that the Iranian boats had threatened the boats or that it had nearly resulted in firing on the Iranian boats.

On the contrary, the release made the US warships handling of the incident sound almost routine. "Following standard procedures," the release said, "Hopper issued warnings, attempted to establish communications with the small boats and conducted evasive maneuvering."

The release did not refer to a US ship being close to firing on the Iranian boats, or to a call threatening that US ships would "explode in a few minutes", as later stories would report, or to the dropping of objects into the path of a US ship as a potential danger.

That press release was ignored by the news media, however, because later that Monday morning, the Pentagon provided correspondents with a very different account of the episode.

At 9am, Barbara Starr of CNN reported that "military officials" had told her that the Iranian boats had not only carried out "threatening maneuvers", but had transmitted a message by radio that "I am coming at you" and "you will explode". She reported the dramatic news that the commander of one boat was "in the process of giving the order to shoot when they moved away".

CBS News broadcast a similar story, adding the detail that the Iranian boats "dropped boxes that could have been filled with explosives into the water". Other news outlets carried almost identical accounts of the incident.

The source of this spate of stories can now be identified as Bryan Whitman, the top Pentagon official in charge of media relations, who gave a press briefing for Pentagon correspondents that morning. Although Whitman did offer a few remarks on the record, most of the Whitman briefing was off the record, meaning that he could not be cited as the source.

In an apparent slip-up, however, an Associated Press story that morning cited Whitman as the source for the statement that US ships were about to fire when the Iranian boats turned and moved away - a part of the story that other correspondents had attributed to an unnamed Pentagon official.

On January 9, the US Navy released excerpts of a video of the incident in which a strange voice - one that was clearly very different from the voice of the Iranian officer who calls the US ship in the Iranian video - appears to threaten the US warships.

A separate audio recording of that voice, which came across the VHS channel open to anyone with access to it, was spliced into a video on which the voice apparently could not be heard. That was a political decision, and Lieutenant Colonel Mark Ballesteros of the Pentagon's Public Affairs Office told IPS the decision on what to include in the video was "a collaborative effort of leadership here, the Central Command and navy leadership in the field".

"Leadership here", of course, refers to the secretary of defense and other top policymakers at the department. An official in the US Navy Office of Information in Washington, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue, said that decision was made in the office of the secretary of defense.

That decision involved a high risk of getting caught in an obvious attempt to mislead. As an official at Fifth Fleet headquarters in Bahrain told IPS, it is common knowledge among officers there that hecklers - often referred to as "Filipino Monkey" - frequently intervene on the VHF ship-to-ship channel to make threats or rude comments.

One of the popular threats made by such hecklers, according to British journalist Lewis Page, who had transited the strait with the Royal Navy is, "Look out, I am going to hit [collide with] you."

By January 11, Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell was already disavowing the story that Whitman had been instrumental in creating only four days earlier. "No one in the military has said that the transmission emanated from those boats," said Morrell.

The other elements of the story given to Pentagon correspondents were also discredited. The commanding officer of the guided missile cruiser Port Royal, Captain David Adler, dismissed the Pentagon's story that he had felt threatened by the dropping of white boxes in the water. Meeting with reporters on Monday, Adler said, "I saw them float by. They didn't look threatening to me."

The naval commanders seemed most determined, however, to scotch the idea that they had been close to firing on the Iranians. Cosgriff, the commander of the Fifth Fleet, denied the story in a press briefing on January 7. A week later, Commander Jeffery James, commander of the destroyer Hopper, told reporters that the Iranians had moved away "before we got to the point where we needed to open fire".

The decision to treat the January 6 incident as evidence of an Iranian threat reveals a chasm between the interests of political officials in Washington and navy officials in the Gulf. Asked whether the navy's reporting of the episode was distorted by Pentagon officials, Lydia Robertson of Fifth Fleet Public Affairs would not comment directly. But she said, "There is a different perspective over there."

But why isn't mainstream media (MSM) reporting about other tapes U.S. Intelligence kept from the 9/11 Commission?

In today's 2-minute news sound bites it's easy to deceive. Anthrax is released in letters and you are to believe that it came from Iraq. Next thing you know, we have a war in Iraq to eliminate their none existent stockpiles of anthrax. An "al Qaeda" suicide tape is released and you are to believe it came from al Qaeda.

Since the most important 9/11 hijackers were ringleader Mohammed Atta and Ziad Zarrah, let's take a close look at the release of their "last will" tape and how it was reported. Clearly, the CIA kept other important 9/11 tapes from the 9/11 Commission and MSM helped with the cover-up.

The so-called Laughing Hijackers tape was obtained by London Sunday Times on September 30, 2006 and reported the next day. Read closely this article from MSNBC and you will see this quote about this "al Qaeda" video. The images were taken from a videotape the U.S. military supposedly recovered from an al Qaeda compound after the invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001. That's right - the U.S Government had these tapes for five years before they were mysteriously delivered to the media.

But MSNBC didn't break this story - the London Sunday Times did. "The Sunday Times has obtained a copy of the video through a previously tested channel." “Previously tested channel” to me means, this isn't the first time. It's worth noting that the person the tapes were delivered to previously worked for Al Jeezra and was the one who broke previous al Qaeda tape releases. His name is Yosri Fouda.

How did ABC report this leak of these "new" tapes that the U.S. Government had for five years and that no one knew about? This is the first sentence under their headline "The Man Who Received Tape From Al Qaeda Talks to ABC About the Al Qaeda PR Machine.” Now am I wrong, or does that seem to indicate these tapes came from al Qaeda? In this article they pretend these tapes came from al Qaeda. They didn't.

Here is a little nugget from CNN on their reporting "A U.S. intelligence official told CNN the intelligence community has been aware of the video for some time." No kidding. They had these tapes for five years. I say tapes because when this was released there were two parts of this video according to the breaking story.

Dates on the tape show Atta was filmed on January 18, 2000, together with Ziad Jarrah, the pilot of United Airlines flight 93. The high quality, unedited film shows bin Laden addressing his followers at the mud-walled complex near Kandahar. Dating on the tape indicates that the Al Qaeda leader was filmed on January 8, 2000, ten days before Atta and Jarrah recorded their wills.

The tapes consist of two parts: Atta and Jarrah supposedly reading their wills dated January 18, 2000, and a speech by bin Ladin dated January 8, 2000. You can watch them here.

I urge you to watch the bin Laden speech and try to convince yourself that this is not a surveillance tape, made in order to capture the images of people there. That seems to be what it is. It pans the crowd and freeze-frames their images before moving on to another. There is not a whole lot of interest in the speech and the speaker. It is odd, don't you think, to focus on people in the audience instead of the speaker at the event? Why would al Qaeda do surveillance on themselves? They wouldn't.

But to pretend U.S. intelligence didn't want to do surveillance on Al Qaeda is laughable. Of course they did, which brings up the ugly possibility that these tapes were not "found" in some house in Afghanistan in 2001 but were actually made by U.S. Intelligence.

One thing is not in question though, although MSM wouldn't tell you this: this was used as a surveillance tape. While this tape was kept secret from the 9/11 Commission, it was being used on detainees in Guantanamo to try to get them to confess to being members of Al Qaeda. Here is the proof.

In March 2006, seven months before the world was told of these tapes a movie was already made and released documenting the experiences of three people who were actually held in Guantanamo. These three people who were finally deemed innocent had their experience acted out in the docudrama Road to Guantanamo.

At 1:38 into this clip, a person from Washington DC shows a tape of a bin Laden speech dated Jan 8 2000 this interrogation was being done in 2003. So in 2003, the Government was using this tape in Guantanamo as a surveillance tape. Three years later, they released it along with the Atta video to the reporter who received the "al Qaeda" tapes.

According to the MSNBC article, they had this tape just after 9/11 and before the start of the 9/11 Commission. After the 9/11 Commission was concluded, they anonymously released it to an overseas reporter who received the other "al Qaeda" tapes. It was then reported in MSM as an al Qaeda tape. The media helped the U.S. Government pass this off as an al Qaeda tape, keeping the public in the dark.

Does the 9/11 Commission even care that this was kept from them? Why don't they bring this up? Why doesn't the media? The only site that seemed to notice this and tried to get attention focused on it was PrisonPlanet.

But since this is a so-called "conspiracy site" why pay heed to it? Because, I just showed you a conspiracy has taken place. This article stated, "Immediate Congressional investigation demanded." Finally, over a year later, the Senate Intelligence Committee is holding hearings on the CIA keeping tapes from the 9/11 Commission. But not these tapes.

The time has come for MSM and Congress to start doing their jobs and start being honest with the American people. And the time is now for the American people to start demanding answers. On January 16, the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence will hold a hearing on the CIA tapes.

Of course it's a closed hearing, but demand they ask about these tapes as well. Contact them here. Stop letting them get away with deceiving you.

White-House-President.com is NOT a Government Website or Blog

Report: British Army Recruiting Children As Young as Seven Years of Age

FROM: www.jrct.org.uk/core/documents/download.asp?id=251

ARMY MARKETING MISLEADS RECRUITS, WARNS NEW REPORT

Children as young as seven targeted with a glamorised view of warfare

Potential new recruits to the army are subjected to a misleading picture of life in the military, according to a new report backed by the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust, launched today.

Advertisements and recruitment literature glamorise warfare, omit vital information and fail to point out the risks and responsibilities associatedwith a forces career, says the report. “Informed Choice? Armed Forces and Recruitment Practice in the UK” states that:

• For every two 16 to 22 year olds joining the army, one is leaving

• In 2007, 48% of all soldiers found army life to be worse thanexpected, with only 20% thinking it was better

• The UK is the only EU state to recruit 16 year olds and children as young as seven are targeted by recruiters

• Recruiters often don’t meet the parents of minors

• More than £2billion is invested annually in training; most of this is used to train approximately 20,000 new recruits who replace those who leave each year

• Many recruits enlist without fully understanding their legal obligations; literature fails to mention that unless they leave within sixmonths of enlisting, minors have no legal right to leave for four years.

The report recommends sweeping changes to armed forces recruitment policies including: a new Charter setting out the state’s responsibilities; a radical review of recruitment literature; phasing out recruitment of minors; and new rights for recruits to leave service.

Only when these changes are made, it says, will potential recruits be able to exercise their right to make an informed choice about enlisting. A new website, also funded by the JRCT and going live today, aims to give‘independent and fair information about the benefits, risks and terms of service of a career in the armed forces’. Concerned parents and potential recruits can access it at www.beforeyousignup.info.

“Informed Choice?” concludes that the armed forces:

• Largely fail to inform recruits about the risks of a forces career

• Curtail recruits’ rights to withdraw their consent from employment

• Largely depend on the socially and economically vulnerable to enlist for negative reasons

• Recruit minors without adequate safeguards.

Peace and Security analyst and the report’s author, David Gee, says that the armed forces glamorise the ‘action man and woman aspects of forces life’. He says:

“A career in the armed forces can provide young people with opportunities. But there are risks and legal obligations that don’t exist incivilian life. It is therefore vital that potential recruits fully understand what they are getting into and can make an informed choice about whether to enlist. The action man and woman picture does not tell the whole story.

“The armed forces have a poor retention record, partly because they promise recruits more than they can deliver, so thousands end up wanting to leave as soon as possible. Not only will a more balanced and honestapproach to recruitment ensure that those who join do so for the right reasons, it will also help reduce the huge resources spent on replacing personnel.”

Notes to Editors

• “Informed Choice? Armed Forces and Recruitment Practice in the UK” is an independent report wholly funded by the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust. The report, written by peace and security expert David Gee, is the result of 10 months’ unique research and analysis of the armed forces’ recruitment literature and processes. It assesses whether potential recruits and their parents are provided with an accurate and full description of a forces career, including its potential benefits and risks

• David Gee is an independent researcher based in London.
